Forest School

Intent

At Holly Trees Primary School, our Forest School provision is rooted in the internationally recognised Forest School methodology, originally pioneered in Scandinavia. We intend to offer a truly child-centred approach to outdoor learning, where pupils are encouraged to take appropriate risks within a clear and safe structure. By learning to assess danger in real situations, children develop the ability to keep themselves safe and make informed choices. Forest School is a key part of our learning outside the classroom and aims to build confidence, resilience, independence and a deep appreciation of the natural world. We strive to provide rich, hands-on experiences that nurture curiosity, teamwork and a lifelong love of the outdoors.

Implementation

Forest School sessions take place throughout the year, embracing all weather conditions to help children experience the outdoors in its natural cycle. Most sessions are held beyond our school grounds in Holly Wood or Warley Country Park—both within safe walking distance. In agreement with Brentwood Borough Council, we ensure these areas are kept litter-free and that we leave no trace of our activities, modelling responsible stewardship of local habitats.

Sessions are planned and led by a qualified Forest School practitioner, using a child-led approach that encourages exploration, problem-solving and creativity. Children learn a wide range of practical skills, including fire lighting, shelter building and the safe use of tools to craft both functional and aesthetically pleasing items from natural materials. Activities are designed to promote cooperation, communication and perseverance, often involving group challenges that strengthen social skills and self-belief.

Impact

The impact of Forest School at Holly Trees is evident in the increased confidence, social development and communication skills shown by our pupils. Overcoming challenges outdoors supports academic achievement, with children returning to the classroom more able to articulate their ideas and work cooperatively with their peers. Engagement with nature also has significant physical, emotional and mental-health benefits, providing balance against modern children’s often high levels of screen exposure.

Pupil voice speaks extremely highly of our provision—our displays reflect the enthusiasm and pride children feel, with the only complaint being that they would like even more Forest School! Our sessions foster a genuine respect and care for the environment, starting with our local woodlands and extending to children’s wider understanding of nature. Forest School encourages both children and families to embrace the richness of childhood and the wealth of experiences that can be found in the great outdoors.
