Intent

We believe that Physical Education is vital in promoting active, healthy lifestyles and developing the whole child. Our PE curriculum aims to inspire all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. Through a progressive and inclusive programme, we intend to build pupils' physical competence, confidence, and understanding of movement, whilst fostering values such as teamwork, resilience, and sportsmanship.

We want our children to develop fundamental movement skills, apply them in a range of sports and activities, and understand the importance of physical fitness for their overall well-being. Our curriculum is designed to ensure that all pupils, regardless of their starting point, can participate, enjoy, and achieve in PE.

Implementation

We use the Get Set 4 PE scheme of work to deliver a broad and balanced PE curriculum that meets the requirements of the National Curriculum. This comprehensive programme provides progressive learning across all year groups, covering a wide range of activities including games, gymnastics, dance, athletics, and outdoor and adventurous activities.

Each class receives two PE lessons per week:

  • One lesson is taught by a qualified sports coach, bringing specialist knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm to enhance the quality of teaching and learning
  • One lesson is taught by the class teacher, ensuring continuity of learning and enabling teachers to develop their own PE teaching skills through working alongside our sports coach

In addition to their regular PE lessons, Year 4 children attend weekly swimming lessons for one term, ensuring they develop water confidence and essential swimming skills in line with National Curriculum requirements.

The Get Set 4 PE scheme provides detailed lesson plans, assessment frameworks, and skill progression maps that support both our sports coaches and class teachers in delivering high-quality lessons. Staff receive ongoing CPD to develop their confidence and expertise in teaching PE.

We ensure that all children have opportunities to participate in intra-school competitions and after-school sports clubs to further develop their skills and passion for physical activity. Children regularly represent the school in borough sporting events and fixtures, including cross-country, football, basketball, rugby, cricket, athletics, and archery. We also participate in Panathlon competitions, providing inclusive sporting opportunities for all pupils to compete against other schools and showcase their talents.

Impact

Through our PE curriculum, children develop physical literacy and the confidence to participate in a range of physical activities. They demonstrate improved fundamental movement skills, greater physical fitness, and enhanced coordination and control.

Pupils show enthusiasm for PE and understand the importance of leading healthy, active lives. They develop resilience, perseverance, and the ability to work collaboratively with others. Children demonstrate good sportsmanship, showing respect for rules, opponents, and teammates.

Our inclusive approach ensures that all children, including those with SEND and those who are less physically confident, make good progress from their starting points and experience success in PE. The specialist coaching model ensures high-quality teaching whilst building teacher capacity and confidence in delivering outstanding PE.

Assessment through Get Set 4 PE allows us to track pupil progress and ensure that learning is progressive and challenging. Children leave our school with the skills, knowledge, and love of sport and physical activity that will benefit them throughout their lives.
